What I REALLY REALLY Want!

November 14th, 2011 • Posted by Hannah morren • Permalink

Many times the greatest difficulty when getting your hair done is not necessarily whether it's a great cut and color, but rather if it's the cut and color you REALLY want! So why is it so difficult to translate what you want into what you actually get? Your stylist has been educated, and trained with industry specific terminology; This education can create a language barrier between the stylist and the client. This is why the consultation is so very important. For new clients, ask the salon to schedule an extra 10-15 minute consultation prior to your hair appointment; This provides the stylist time to focus, plan and execute the perfect strategy while considering your hair’s history, texture and desired ideal look. Here are a few tips that will help you better communicate with your stylist:
Sleek, Smooth Layers: Ask your stylist to texturize your hair & take out the weight in your cut.
Soft Bangs & Face Framing: Ask your stylist to use point cutting techniques and/or use the razor.
Full Body Building Layers: Ask your stylist build weight within your haircut
Short Feminine Cut: Ask your stylist to build body in your crown and leave wispy hairs around the hairline
Let your stylist know the struggles you have with your hair and ask for suggestions for a haircut that will help reduce your daily styling battle.
All Over Color: Always ask for a swatch book and advise your stylist which colors are too dark/light, and if you like red shades, or soft natural brown/blonde shades
Dimensional color, Highlights/Lowlights: It’s vital that you express to your stylist the amount of each color you wish to see. Let your stylist know that you want to be predominately brunette/blonde/red so that you are as light/dark as you wish to be all over while still maintaining the dimension you wish to find from the highlights/lowlights. Your stylist will help give recommendations and let you know what’s going to look best, based on skin tone, face shape etc. Feel free to bring images you've collected of favorite colors and cuts and know that most salons have their own library as well! A little planning and extra communication will go a long way in achieving the perfect look designed just for you!

What exactly is a facial and is it worth it?

September 27th, 2011 • Posted by Lori Watkins • Permalink

Most people have heard of the term “facial” or seen it on a spa menu, but still aren't really sure what to expect or what benefits make it worth the time and money. So, let’s break down the basics of a facial treatment and the positive effects it can have on the skin.

Basic Steps: Analysis: Upon arrival you’ll complete a brief skin analysis to answer a few questions about your skin type and any concerns you may want to address. Once in the treatment room and comfortable, your esthetician will take a close look at your skin by covering your eyes and using a brightly lit magnifying lamp to examine the condition of your skin. A suitable combination of skincare products will be selected and concerns/questions you may have about the condition of your skin or about the treatment will be discussed.

Cleansing: The treatment begins with a thorough cleanse with a product chosen for your skin type to remove makeup or residue on the skin and is followed by warm aromatherapy scented sponges to gently remove the product.

Exfoliation: A gentle exfoliating cream is used to exfoliate and gently slough away built up dead skin cells and leave the skin feeling soft.

Hydration: The next step taken is to apply a hydrating or clay type mask and warm steam to further calm and moisturize the skin. For extra pampering, a mask/lotion is also applied to the feet followed by hot towels.

Extractions: When the skin is completely clean and well hydrated, your esthetician will take another close look to examine the skin and deep clean any pores that are clogged or congested. The extractions are one of the most important parts of the facial if needed because a skilled esthetician can remove them safely with less chance of damaging the skin than if you attempt this on your own. Extractions can be painful for some people. It’s important to communicate to your esthetician as she works.

Additional Cleansing and Hydration: The extractions are followed by a decongesting scrub or toner to further exfoliate and kill bacteria. Another mask is applied and allowed to set while you enjoy a relaxing shoulder, neck, hand and foot massage. Once the mask is removed with a warm towel, a combination of active treatment products including eye creams, serums or vitamins, moisturizers and of course sunscreen are applied.

Advice and Recommendations: Once the facial has concluded, your esthetician will take time to answer questions and make suggestions regarding future treatments and/or a skincare product recommendations for use at home on a daily basis for even better results. At this point you're relaxed and your skin feels amazingly clean and soft!

Your Next Visit: Regularly scheduled facials are beneficial to the skin in so many ways. Not only are they great for correcting and clearing up problem, breakout prone skin types, but also for keeping and maintaining a healthy, youthful complexion. A professional facial is recommended about once a month for healthy, hydrated skin. Not only will you love the relaxing spa experience, but also the way your skin looks and feels!

This service typically lasts one hour and ranges from $80. All facials are customized for your specific skin. Hi. My name is Anysa. I live in St.Louis and my mother lives in Denton. We were both teenage moms and struggled for years to pull ourselves up and be the best we could be. I have to say mom is just the most wonderful woman on this planet. Strong, soft, smart, open, determined and most of funny!I work at Washington University- BJC Hospital which keeps me VERY busy. I only get to visit with mom maybe once a year. We keep lists of things we need to do, discuss, vist, try, etc. One thing she'd like to do is find a "good" stylist. Well, twist my arm! I'd love to try your salon and hopefully my mom will be a regular ... everytime she walks in yall will holler "JILL!"

Being the owner of a hair salon, I try to keep myself in tune to our ever-changing and creative industry as well as what drives consumer buying decisions. Suffice it to say, the last few years have been tricky to predict buying trends with all the uncertainty we have faced with our volitile economy. My staff and I are grateful for the loyal patronage of our clients and we are always seeking new and innovative ways to attract new and lost clients to introduce them to our value-laden menu offerings. So what's keeping you from splurgin' this summer on a cool new highlight or hot edgy haircut? I want to hear from you! Drop me a note at info@splurgesalon.com and tell me the reason I don't have your business. The first 5 to respond will receive a gift from me-a complimentary haircut because I want to try and earn your business! Winners will be notified by e-mail. Hi Lori! Love your blog and your website. In answer to your question about whats keeping us from the "splurge" on ourselves, I say it is simply time! So many demands on our time leaving us feeling like we only can fit so much in the day. Summer is especially a hard time for mom's because we are trying to work - entertain kids and keep some kind of a schedule. I think you'll see tons of moms come in for services after school starts! - Jill Y. - Keller
